How to Turn a Podcast Into Social Media Clips

Why most podcast clips fail, and what the ones that travel have in common.

Most podcast clips do not work. They are a minute pulled from the middle of a conversation, cropped to vertical, captioned, and posted. There is no reason for a stranger to watch them.

What a clip needs that an episode does not

An episode has an audience that already chose it. A clip has to earn a stranger's attention in one second, with no context and probably no sound.

That means every clip needs:

  • A complete thought. It has to make sense to someone who has never heard of your show.
  • A hook in the first second. Not a logo, not a title card — the most interesting moment.
  • A reason to exist. A claim, a story, a disagreement, a number that surprises.

How to find them

Listen for the moments where the conversation changed temperature. Someone disagreed. Someone told a story they had not planned to tell. Someone said a number out loud.

Those moments are almost never at the start of an episode, and they are almost never the section you planned in advance.

How to cut them

Start on the hook, not the setup. It is usually right to begin mid-sentence.

Keep them between 30 and 60 seconds. Longer works when the story genuinely needs it, but it rarely does.

Caption everything by hand. Auto-captions get names and jargon wrong, and those are exactly the words that carry the point.

How many per episode

Six to ten strong clips from a good hour-long conversation. Not twenty — a feed of weak clips trains people to scroll past your show.
