How Long Does Podcast Editing Take?
Real turnaround times by format, and what makes an episode take three times longer than expected.
Turnaround matters more than most hosts realise when choosing an editor, because a podcast is a schedule before it is anything else.
Typical times
Audio-only interview, two speakers: 24 to 48 hours.
Video podcast, two to four cameras: 48 to 72 hours.
Heavily produced narrative episode: one to two weeks. This is a different kind of work — scripted structure, music, sound design, sometimes archive.
Social clips: usually 24 hours after the main episode is approved, because the clips are chosen from the finished cut.
What makes an episode take longer
A single mixed track. Every fix now affects everyone, so problems that would take minutes take hours.
Unclear direction. "Make it tighter" costs a round of revisions. "Cut from 22:10 to 28:40, keep the tangent at 51:00" does not.
Late additions. An intro or sponsor read arriving after the edit is finished means re-exporting and re-checking the whole episode.
Technical problems. Drift between remote recordings, a corrupted file, a camera that stopped at 40 minutes.
What a reliable schedule looks like
The useful question is not "how fast can you turn one around" but "can you do it on the same day every week". A studio that delivers in 48 hours unpredictably is harder to build a show on than one that always delivers on Thursday.
